The nuance about skills versus topics is gold. Ive watched too many PhDs struggle with career moves because they think they're locked into their dissertation topic forever when really its the research methodology that transfers. The traceability example with the Kenyan biochar project really nails the practial challenge of holding high standards without throwin up your hands. I tend to think the tension you describe between Rainbow's team and project developers is actually where the innovation happens becuase pressure creates clarity around what compliance truly requires.
